To resolve the stir between contractual workers and Orient Paper Mills (OPM) management, the SDM called for meeting at Rest House, Sohagpur, But surprisingly, no one from OPM management appeared for the meeting which was attended by MLA Jai Singh Maravi, Tehsildar, Budar, TI, Amlai, Inspector Parihar and officer from the Assistant Labour Commissoner. Even a few contractors attended this meeting.
Discussion started on the demand letter submitted by contractual workers to the OPM management.

The Labour Inspector was asked for ensuring implementation of the labour laws and payment of minimum wages. He informed that he has no right to inquire into this matter as his senior officers can look into this matter. RS Tripathi, President, Labour Union said that Labour Laws are never implemented. SDM assured that he would look into this matter.

The contractor informed that many workers have reported for duty to which the SDM said that contractual workers have right to raise their demands.

The SDM informed that he would inform Collector, Anuppur about this meeting. Labour Union President R S Tripathi, Secretary Shreekant Mishra and Rudrapratap Dubey informed in detail about the demands of the contractual workers and demanded for its solution. It may be mentioned that more then 500 contractual workers of OPM are sitting on dharma at c-32 gate of the mill in support of their various demands. They are opposing the agreement which OPM management finalized on August 11, 2018 and hence since August 20, they are sitting on dharna. MLA Jai Singh Maravi had also met the workers on strike. The workers informed that despite working for many years at OPM they were not given pay slip, attendance card, and employers’ card. They are not confirmed whether their ESI deduction wabeing done as they had not been given identity card and EPF slip. When they asked for minimum wages, they were being thrown out of work.

The workers informed that OPM reached to agreement with labour organisation but contractual workers were not being given benefits of it and hence they are sitting on dharna since so many days.
