Bargi Dam authority opens gates to prevent flooding

Taking a serious note of increasing water level at Rani Avanti Bai Sagar Pariyojna, Bargi Dam, the dam authority increased water discharging upto 3,465 cumec from 11 gates, on Saturday. Incessant downpour on the upstream of river Narmada in Mandla and Dindori districts increased the water level of reservoir upto 422.90 metres against its peak height of 422.76 metres.


Executive Engineer of Bargi Dam, Ajay Sure, while talking to ‘The Hitavada’, informed that following the incessant rains at the catchment areas of the reservoir, over 3,300 cumec water inflow was reported in the reservoir. Taking precautionary measures, opening height of 11 gates of 0.72 metre was increased upto 2.04 metres on Saturday, 9 am for discharging of 3,465 cumec water from the reservoir. The gates were first opened at their opening heights of 0.72 metres.


Along with the water discharging from the gates of reservoir, the hydel power station of Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board (MPSEB) was operating on its full load capacity of 90 MW. Water discharging from the hydel power project was being carried out at 212 cumec.


The Executive Engineer of Bargi Dam informed that prior to the opening of gates, the Collectors, Superintendents of Police and other concerned departments of Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Raisen, Hoshangabad, Sehore, Dewas, Harda, Khargone, Khandwa district were informed for ensuring the implementation of necessary safety measures at banks of the river.
