the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has done well to recall home delinquent cricketers Hardik Pandya and K. L. Rahul from the tour of Australia and hand them two-match suspension for their comments on women at a talk show on a TV channel. Indian Captain Virat Kohli has very rightly said that he and his teammates do not support them and that though there may be some vacuum in the composition of the team because of the punishment to the two players, he is not unduly perturbed over their absence because there is much cushion for selection.

Former cricketer Harbhajan Singh has quite rightly expressed apprehension about the wrong message the utterances of the two young players might give to upcoming sportspersons and the impression they may convey to the people at large. Harbhajan Singh is right in saying that this is not the team culture and Virat Kohli echoing similar feelings for the delinquent cricketers “inappropriate” remarks. The captain and the rest of the team members have done well in conveying to the two players that they thoroughly disapprove of their manners. Harbhajan’s concern over people questioning moral characters of past cricketers is quite understandable.

Competitive sports is such a field that it does not allow any wayward behaviour and that is the unwritten rule. Several sportspersons have had to pay very dearly for their wayward behaviour, either on the field or off the field. Because discipline and unflinching commitment in sports is the core value. Hardik Pandya and K. L. Rahul have grossly violated this unwritten code by their comments and deeds off the field. Deservingly they have been recalled back home from the ongoing tour. This may be unprecedented happening for cricket in India but the offense has been so grave that they deserve the punishment.

Pandya and K. L. Rahul are in their early days in Team India. Hence they should have been more circumspect in their behaviour and comments so as not to jeopardise their position in the team. They are important members of the Team India and they should be more responsible. They could as well be part of the World Cup. But their delinquent behaviour could cost them dearly as the BCCI and the captain have expressed their displeasure in no uncertain terms. It is their responsibility that the atmosphere in the team is not muddied due to the perverse and irresponsible behaviour of the few. Hence there could be no regrets over the suspension of the two players. In such cases prompt action is of essence. And the captain and the BCCI acted with welcome promptness so as to send the right message to the players.
