UNION Agriculture Minister Mr. Radha Mohan Singh has quite rightly said that cooperative sector has the potential to bridge the rich-poor gap. But it is the most neglected sector despite its potential and success stories of the past. Western Maharashtra is the living example of how the cooperative movement can bring about a transformation in the lives of not only those involved in the agricultural field but also of the whole rural region. But of late even this success story of the sugar belt of Maharashtra is facing hiccups, not because the model has failed but because of other extraneous reasons. Mr. Radha Mohan Singh has talked about the need for skilled manpower to run projects under the cooperative sector. This is only one aspect. The other more important factor for decay is that the cooperative societies have been turned into political battle grounds. And when political oneupmanship takes centrestage then the real purpose of the institution is lost. Hence for revival of the cooperative sector politics should have no place and mutual trust is abiding value.

THE revival of the old fighting spirit and matching performance in cricket great Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the second one-day-international against hosts Australia is a happy event in international cricket. His 54-ball 55 runs show that he has the capability of returning to centrestage and help the team at right moments. This knock has its own importance when the cricketing circles are discussing waning of Dhoni’s prowess as a batsman. Some went to the extent that with his age overtaking his spirit, Dhoni may never be able to regain his old capabilities having been failed by his muscles. To certain extent, the concerns may be right. Yet, in the past two years, cricketing circles have seen MSD rising to occasion time and again whenever the question of his contribution has come up. In the second ODI when Captain Virat Kohli had laid a strong foundation for victory, but could not himself take the team to the finish line, it was Dhoni who took up the task. His knock was not just useful but also very stylish, to say the least.
