RAIPUR,

Amidst hectic parleys between senior Members of BJP Legislature Party, former Speaker of Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly and BJP State President Dharamlal Kaushik was elected unanimously as the BJP Legislature Party Leader.

Since, the Bharatiya Janata Party has requisite number of Legislators in the House (i.e. 10% of total Assembly segments), it has been given the status of principal opposition party of the state and thus its Legislature Party Leader will also be the Leader of Opposition in Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly.

Dharamlal Kaushik, a BJP Legislator from Bilha Assembly constituency in Bilaspur district, was elected as Legislature Party Leader in a meeting of BJP Legislature Party held here at BJP regional head-quarters Ekatma Parisar in the presence of Dr Thawar Chand Gehlot Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment and BJP National General Secretary Dr Anil Jain, who were present as Central Observers from BJP.

Dharamlal Kaushik, son of Bhagwat Prasad Kaushik and Mehatarin Bai, was born on February 1, 1958 at village Parsada in Bilaspur district. He completed his MA and LL B from Pt Ravishankar Shukla University, Raipur. Kaushik, hails from OBC ‘Kurmi’ community, comes from agriculture background and is an Advocate practicing in Bilaspur District and Sessions Court.

Kaushik was elected as Legislator from Bilha for the first time in 1998. Thereafter, he was elected thrice and had executed his responsibilities as Speaker of Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly during second term of BJP led government from 2008 to 2013. Since 2014, Kaushik was BJP State unit President in Chhattisgarh. It is worth mentioning here that the Congress had registered a landslide victory in recently held general elections for Chhattisgarh Legislative Assembly and won 68 seats in the 90 Member Assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party, which was in power for three consecutive tenures since 2003, was reduced to 15 seats while the coalition of Janta Congress Chhattisgarh (J) and Bahujan Samaj Party led by former Chief Minister Ajit Jogi strengthened its position by winning seven seats.

Meanwhile, the election of the BJP Legislature Party Leader was not smooth as expected. If a senior BJP leader is to be believed, the election of Dharamlal Kaushik was not without hiccups as is being projected. Already senior BJP leaders Naniram Kanwar, Brijmohan Agrawal and Ajay Chandrakar had staked their claim for the coveted post. In-between there was an apprehension that former Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh was tipped to become the BJP Legislature Party Leader.

During the meeting of BJP Legislature Party, most of the Members reportedly demanded election through secret ballot for the coveted post but the demand was rejected by the Central Observers. It was being stated that BJP National President Amit Shah had to step in to make the matters smooth and finally the decision of central leadership was complied with and BJP State President Dharamlal Kaushik was unanimously elected to the post of BJP Legislature Party Leader.
