Tension in Gorabazar after Army team tries to raze temple

TENSION was reported at Gorabazar on Friday morning after a demolition team of Army reached the spot to demolish an old Hanuman temple (Barauchi).

The temple has been in existence for around 200 years and has been constructed on land reserved for Army. In the agitation staged by locals on being informed Cantonment MLA Ashok Rohani, Abhishek Chouksey Vice-President Cantonment Board, Corporator Sundar Agrawal reached the spot and held talks with the Army administration and highly peeved residents from the region. The talks proved conducive as demolition of the temple has been deferred. The temple was constructed in the beginning of 19th century.

According to information, tension mounted at Old Hanuman Temple (Barauchi) under Gorabazar police post on Friday morning. When a team of Army reached the spot to demolish the old temple allegedly constructed on land reserved for Army. The land is being subjected to elongated dispute between temple administration and Army. Recently, the Apex Court gave verdict in favour of Army and had ordered for possession of the land by Army. So on Friday, the Army administration reached the spot to take possession of the reserved land by deploying JCB as a step to demolish the ancient temple. The Army movement on Friday morning to demolish the temple caused huge resentment among people belonging to various sections of the society.

MLA Ashok Rohani, who reached the spot, after being informed of the massive agitation staged by locals informed that a meeting in this regard in presence of Army and administration will be called upon to arrive to an unanimous decision on the temple issue. Vice-President of Cantonment Board Abhishek Chouksey informed that the temple constructed around 200 years ago has archaeological significance. The Army administration can take possession of the land but no attempts should be made to demolish the ancient temple.

However, if the construction made on the land apart from the area where the temple exists. All such construction can be removed but 15 days time should be given. In view of large protest staged by locals, police force was deployed to take stock of the situation and to avert any untoward incident during dharna. After being informed, MLA Cantt Ashok Rohani, Abhishek Chouksey, Corporator Sundar Agrawal reached the spot and mediated between agitated people and Army administration. The talks proved conducive as demolition of the temple has been deferred owning to massive protest.
