“JABALPUR Municipal Corporation (JMC) is forcing people to consume highly contaminated water. Indifferent attitude towards supplying pure drinking water is proving dear to people as many are falling ill after consuming unhygienic potable water,” alleged Saurabh Sharma, General Secretary of MPCC while addressing a press conference, no Saturday. He alleged that thousands of people in the city have been suffering from dreadful diseases. Many of them even had to pay with their lives. When Congressmen conducted deep investigation of reasons behind people’s sufferings and deaths, they found polluted drinking water supply is the root cause.

Sharma further alleged that 90 per cent people of the city have digestion problem or diseases related to stomach. During investigation, Congressmen found potable water supplied by JMC is highly contaminated with Coliform and E Coli and other bacteria. Sharma said they have collected water samples from 150 dwellings situated in different areas of the city and got them tested by recognised laboratory.

The laboratory confirmed presence of dangerous Coliform and E Coli bacteria in potable water. He said bacteria present in sewer water gets mixed into potable water through leakages in main water supply lines.

Sharma alleged that authorities concerned in JMC are indulged in corruption in repairing of old damaged pipelines. JMC allegedly spent crores on leakages repairing work but it has failed to keep water supply line leakage-free. He said presence of bacteria in potable water indicates that it is contaminated with feces or sewage and it can lead to serious ailments. Children and older adults have a greater risk of developing a life threatening form of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Sharma said the Congress will soon start ‘Swachh Jal Kranti Abhiyan’ to take serious issue amongst people and make them aware of health hazards of consuming impure drinking water. It will also start a movement for dissolution of Jabalpur Municipal Corporation.
