INCREASING craze of modified silencers in motorcycle leads to deafening common people in the city. Chaotic city traffic always remains a challenge for police and other authorities but unapproved fitments in vehicles is proving a new difficulty before law agencies. Modification of vehicles is a new concept but overlooking mandatory standards of Motor Vehicle Act is vulnerable to health and environment as well. According to automotive norms, vehicles should adhere to noise norm of maximum 80 decibel, but modifications take noise level to 100 decibel and above.

There are several Government agencies like Road Transport Department, Pollution Control Board and Traffic Police for mobilising Motor Vehicle Act and Pollution Control Act but none of these agencies took initiative. Additional SP (Traffic) Amrat Meena, while talking to ‘The Hitavada’, said that traffic police are toiling hard to improve traffic management and better enforcement of Motor Vehicle Act and Pollution Control Norms. It is correct that police are yet to take cognisance to check modification of vehicles and its silencers. He assured to soon start a special campaign to put-up a vigilant check on modification of vehicles against norms of Motor Vehicle Act and pollution control measures. Amidst trend of catching others’ attention, youngsters are modifying vehicles, especially motorcycles.

Craze of modifying vehicles is getting troublesome for better implementation of norms. There is need of collaborative efforts on the part of Pollution Control Board, Road Transport Department and Traffic Police to initiate special campaign to check menace of vehicles modification.
