Staff Reporter,

32,000 households are without any drinking water connection

In-spite of availability of water network, around 32,000 households do not have any connection to get drinking water. This shocking detail came to fore in a survey conducted by Cybertech Company recently. It is the responsibility of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Orange City Water (OCW) to provide connection to all the households in the city. However, an estimated 1.18 lakh households do not have any legal water connection.

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is losing huge revenue in absence of metered water connections in these houses. These households are receiving water from the available network but without any metered connections, they are not paying actual water charges as local body is levying General Water Tax in Property Tax charges only.  As per information, the 11,225 water consumers of Bhandewadi are not having water connection even though their areas have proper water network. As many as 3,243 water consumers of Pili Nadi, 3,558 consumers of Narsala and 2,429 consumers of Hudkeshwar are not having water connections.

Cash strapped civic body is supplying metered water to 3,87,633 consumers in the city while around 1,18,000 households are receiving water without any legal meter. As per information gathered by Cybertech company, Sakkardara area has maximum 44,886 metered water connections followed by Bhandewadi area with 40,939 metered water connections.

The city has 62,656 households which do not have any water connection as water network is not available. This includes maximum 15,821 households in Pili Nadi area while 10,779 such households are in Indora and 7,022 connections are in Bhandewadi area without any water connection as network is not available. As per Maharashtra Municipal Corporation (MMC) Act, civic body is barred from levying General Water Tax from these consumers. It is necessary to cover all these consumers in water network areas to supply safe and potable drinking water. The local body is incurring huge financial loss due to such mismanagement on water supply front and if all the connections are metered then the loss will come down substantially.
