Business Bureau,

Air passengers travelling to and from Mumbai are in for a turbulent experience as flight movements will be restricted for a runway upgrade between 11 am and 5 pm on all Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays starting from February 7 till March 30.

On March 21, however, the airport will remain open for the occasion of Holi. The re-carpeting of the airport runways is being carried out to prevent degradation. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai is one of the busiest airports and handles around 1,000 flights a day on an average, sources said on the condition of anonymity  The airlines had been intimated in advance about the runway closure period and accordingly they had rescheduled some of the flights, sources said, adding, however, that some impact was bound to be there. It would be difficult to determine what kind of impact this closure will have on bookings, but fares could rise by 15-30 per cent.

“Most of the airlines are accommodating passengers either in their morning or evening flights by combining flights. Passengers are being informed through SMS messages in this regard. Airlines would be rescheduling some of the flights. Passengers are being offered alternative flights or they can cancel tickets and get refund,” sources said. Most of the international flights have also been rescheduled.

Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the joint venture company that runs the airport is undertaking maintenance and repair of the runways in two phases. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) holds 26 per cent stake in MIAL and GVK Group-led consortium holds majority 74 per cent.
