Banking, insurance ops crippled as employees join strike

Banking and insurance operations were crippled on Tuesday as banks and insurance employees under the umbrella of All India Bank Employees Association (AIBEA), All India Insurance Employees Association (AIIEA), Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), General Insurance Employees All India Association (GIEAIA) and All India LIC Employees Federation (AILICEF) joined nation-wide strike call.


The two-day strike call was given by 10 Central Trade Unions (CTUs) commencing from Tuesday to protest against the Government’s policies. In the banking industry, National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW) affiliated to Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) did not participated in the strike. Transactions worth Rs 1,800 crore were stuck up in Vidarbha, claimed Jaiwant Gurway, General Secretary of Eastern Maharashtra Bank Employees Association (EMBEA) while talking to The Hitavada. More than 1,000 bank employees assembled before Bank of India, Main Branch, Kingsway at 11 am and shouted slogans on all the burning issues.


The demonstrations were led by Jaiwant Gurway. Ashok Atkare, Organising Secretary of EMBEA, Satyashil Rewatkar, Chairman, Chendil Iyer, Virendra Gedam, Suresh Bobhate, President of EMBEA, L P Nandanwar of BEFI and Anil Kaparia of AIBOC addressed the gathering.
Thereafter bank employees took out rally which passed through Jaistambh Chowk, Kasturchand Park and went at Samvidhan Chowk, and joined the huge gathering of organised and unorganised employees under the banner of Kamgar Sanghatana Sanyukata Kirti Samiti. Suresh Bobhate addressed the gathering at Samvidhan Chowk on behalf of EMBEA.


On January 9, bank employees will assemble at Samvidhan Chowk along with other sector employees at 11 am. Prominently present on the occasion were S P Tiwari, Prabhat Kokash, Srikrishna Chendke, Ravi Joshi, Dharshan Naidu, Vijay Thakur, Pankaj Gajbhiye, Rakesh Mahule, Bablu Kolte and B N J Sharma.


In Nagpur, general insurance employees gathered for demonstrations before the Regional Office of United India Insurance Company Limited at Shankar Nagar at 10.30 am. Arun Kulkarni of GIPA and Pradeep Dharamthok, Working President of GIEAIA addressed the employees. The strike has been not called only for wage revision but for other issues. They include disinvestment in public sector, contractual employment systems, attacks on trade unions, amendments to Labour Laws, unemployment, price hike, pension option, minimum wages etc.


He congratulated the agitating employees. The meeting was conducted by Prashant Dixit, Joint Secretary and Working Committee Member of GIEAIA. Chandrakant Deshpande, Deepak Gotmare, Prakash Kanade, Anil Ghodmare, Shyam Parate, Vivek Bhalekar, Homraj Adey, Pankaj Sawalkar, Avinash Hudar and Ramesh Bhagat worked hard for the success of the strike. The strike will continue on Wednesday and the employees will gather at Regional Office of United India Insurance Company Limited.
