GOOD that Government s in the Centre and State moved quickly to seek the end of the hunger strike launched by Gandhian activist Mr. Anna Hazare. However, it is surprising that for the last more than four years the Government did not make any move to set up Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayukta in States. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was on the forefront when Mr. Hazare had launched his indefinite fast for setting up an institution of anti-corruption watch-dog, both at the Centre and in states, forcing Mr. Hazare to begin his fast on January 30. Maharashtra Chief Minister Mr. Devendra Fadnavis along with Central Ministers Mr. Radha Mohan Singh and Mr. Subhash Bhamre announced the acceptance of Mr. Hazare’s demands regarding appointment of Lokpal and Lokayukta and implementation of the Swaminathan Commission report to address agrarian distress, the two main demands of Mr. Hazare. It is now for the Centre and state governments to walk the talk and fulfill their promises which have wider implications.

TRUMP’S CONCERN

IT IS obvious that the United States is beginning to feel the debilitating heat of the stand-off between President Mr. Donald Trump and his Democratic opponents. The nation now realises that it is faced with the danger of a serious disunity among components, thanks to the President’s extreme position on the issue of fence along the Mexican border. Sensing trouble, Mr. Trump raised the issue of unity in his ensuing State of Union Address to the US Congress, urging people not to push things to a snap-point. Similar appeals have come from some of previous Presidents as well. But the situation this time is much more dangerous than ever in the past. Though some sections of the US society put the blame of the chaos squarely at the President’s door, there are others who back him fully. The US has never seen such an internal condition. That is the reason why the US -- and the world -- is looking forward to how the President tackles the challenge, as he talks to the nation in his SoU Address. Details apart, nobody will envy him at this stage.
