A POPULAR belief among cricket teams all over the world in times of a wicket drought is relying on the ‘One Brings Two’ theory. It is on this hope that teams search for a breakthrough. Vidarbha’s cricket team seems to have worked on the same principle to achieve a golden double of Ranji Trophy titles. By lifting their second successive crown with a thumping victory over Saurashtra, Vidarbha have shattered all talks of their maiden triumph being a fluke. The way they paraded through the domestic season is a hope for many other teams seeking a lofty dream. The best part of Vidarbha’s second Ranji title is the way the players handled the pressure of being a defending champion. It is a baggage that weighs down even big names. But skipper Faiz Fazal and coach Chandrakant Pandit shifted the team’s mindset to a higher plane where victory becomes a necessary by-product. Vidarbha’s stupendous win is also a pointer towards the mental toughness of little-known players coming from hinterlands and the state associations’ pursuit. It is a good news for Indian cricket.

CONGRESS party’s new talisman, Mrs. Priyanka Gandhi-Vadra, assumed charge as General Secretary in charge of Eastern Uttar Pradesh, amid hope that her’s would be a game-changer appointment. As the party rallies up in the election year, the hope that Mrs. Gandhi-Vadra would boost electoral prospects has risen. It is not possible to assess the actual impact she may have on the party and its electoral prospects. But it is expected that she would bring with her a lot of freshness of ideas to refurbish a party now feeling confident of a good recovery. Things, of course, will never be easy. Yet, the Congress rank and file are enthused about what is described as enigmatic personality of the new leader. This event, thus, also highlights the party’s predicament as well as emotional engagement with the Gandhi family. If the new talisman in the form of Mrs. Gandhi-Vadra serves its expected purpose, then the Congress party may find itself riding high on a wave. However, given her inexperience, she may prove to be only a new but ineffective face.
