NAGPUR’S Janhvi Hirulkar and Harshal Joge gave Maharashtra more gold medals in the 35th West Zone Junior Athletics Championship under way at the Synthetic Track of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU).
On the second day of the competition, Maharashtra dominated the competition with eight gold, two silver and four bronze medals.
Medal contender Jhanvi won the yellow metal in Under-18 1000m race with a timing of 2 minutes 51.68
seconds.
Janhvi maintained the lead from the start and finished the race with a 50-metre lead over her rival Jyotsna Singh of Madhya Pradesh (03 minutes 00.70 seconds) who won the silver.
Chhattisgarh’s Isha Rani Sinha (03 minutes 03.15 seconds) finished third.
Another city runner Harshal, who hails from Umred, clinched the gold medal in the same category with a time of 2 minutes 33.04 seconds.
Devraj Chavan of Madhya Pradesh clocked 2 minutes 33.23 seconds while Harsh Nishad of Chhattisgarh clocked 2 minutes 35.40 to finish second and third respectively.
The winners were felicitated with medals and mementoes by former international sprinter Snehal Rajput (Palghar), Organising Committee President Shekhar Suryawanshi, Dr Manoj Ambatkar, Adv Nitin Khamborkar and Dr Suyash Pandagale.
