In a shocking case, Chuna Bhatti police have arrested the uncle and aunt of a 19-year-old student, Palak Sondhiya, who had committed suicide in February this year. Police investigations revealed that her uncle, Anand Sondhiya, and aunt, Mamta Sondhiya, had been harassing Palak for not doing household chores and had been subjecting her to physical and mental torture.
According to police, Palak was living with her uncle and aunt in Durganagar, Chuna Bhatti, as her parents had abandoned her. Her mother, Geeta Sondhiya, had remarried and moved to Uttar Pradesh 14 years ago, while her father, Umesh Sondhiya, had also remarried and was living in Jabalpur.
Palak’s brother had died in an accident in 2012. The police investigation found that Palak’s uncle and aunt would often beat her and taunt her for not doing household chores.
They would also force her to do all the household work, despite knowing that she was a student and had to focus on her studies. The harassment had been going on for two years and Palak had become increasingly depressed and frustrated.
Talking to ‘The Hitavada’, ASI Sunil Gurjar, who is investigating the case, said that Palak’s friends and neighbours had told the police that her uncle and aunt had changed their behaviour towards her over the past two years. They had become increasingly strict and would often scold and beat her for not doing household chores. Police have registered a case against Anand and Mamta Sondhiya.
