Two prisoners escaped from Patan Sub-Jail, located around 30 kms from Jabalpur, early on Friday morning. The escape came to light immediately and the jail authorities, along with prison staff, managed to catch the two fugitives after a half-kilometre chase.
Patan Sub-Jail Jailor Hemandra Bagri informed that an unidentified individual threw a rope over the jail’s back wall to help the inmates escape. Using this rope, the prisoners climbed over the wall but were injured when the rope fell at the crucial moment. While trying to scale the 15-feet high wall, the two prisoners suffered injuries in their legs and waist.
They were limping while fleeing through a nearby field.
As soon as the jailbreak was discovered, Jailor Hemendra Bagri reached the scene along with his team and apprehended the two prisoners about half a kilometre away, near Gram Vanwar area. During the chase, the jailor also sustained injury after being hit by iron rod by one of the prisoners on his hand and waist.
The two prisoners, Sheikh Shahadat of Katra and Krishna Yadav of Katangi, Kudhan Mohalla, are both undertrial prisoners. Sheikh Shahadat is accused of rape while Krishna Yadav was imprisoned for illegal liquor sale. Both have been lodged at Patan Sub-Jail for approximately five months.
Following the incident, the Jailor informed Jabalpur Central Jail, District Jail Head Office, and the court about the escape.
The incident took place following the cleaning and maintenance work underway inside
the Patan Sub-Jail, which has led to the entry of women and labourers from outside.
Authorities suspect that the escape plan may have been coordinated with the help of an outsider who was involved in the jailbreak during this period. Currently, both the prisoners are receiving medical treatment in jail for their injuries. Meanwhile, the Jail Superintendent, Akhilesh Tomar reached at Patan Sub-Jail to monitor the investigations.
