December 2023 marked a turning point for Chhattisgarh, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing a resounding victory in the assembly elections, winning 54 out of the 90 seats. For a party that was reduced to a mere 15 seats in 2018, this comeback is not only significant but also historic, even by its own admission. What stood out about this victory was the absence of a projected chief ministerial candidate during the campaign, making the eventual choice of Vishnu Deo Sai to lead the state a carefully deliberated one.

 

A tribal leader from Jashpur, Sai’s political career is marked by humility, accessibility, and a reputation for being grounded. Even after completing a year in office, these qualities remain his hallmark. His appointment was hardly surprising to those familiar with the BJP’s inner workings. During the party’s earlier 15-year rule under Dr Raman Singh, Sai’s name was often floated as a potential successor. This speaks volumes about his standing within the party and his readiness to lead. Sai’s leadership combines patience, vision, and an unyielding commitment to Chhattisgarh’s development. While his demeanour might suggest a slow starter, his aptitude for governance and his ability to fulfil the promises encapsulated in the party’s manifesto, Modi Ki Guarantee, are evident. For the first time since Chhattisgarh’s creation, a tribal leader has taken the reins, aligning with the vision of the state’s founders. However, the Sai Government inherited a challenging legacy. The momentum of progress achieved during Dr Raman Singh’s tenure had been lost over the preceding five years, marred by corruption and inefficiency. The new administration faced the formidable task of restoring governance and tackling issues like Naxalism.

 

As the Sai Government marked its first year in office, it showcased its achievements, emphasising its commitment to transparency and good governance. The Chief Minister reaffirmed the administration’s aspiration to create a “Ram Rajya” and outlined ambitious plans to elevate Chhattisgarh’s GDP to Rs 10 lakh crore by 2028. Declaring 2024 as the “Year of Faith,” Sai criticised the previous Congress regime for creating distrust while highlighting his government’s strides in restoring democratic values. The Sai administration’s key initiatives are both ambitious and impactful. Approval of 18 lakh houses, the disbursement of Rs 6,530 crore to 70 lakh women under the Mahatari Vandan Yojana, and the establishment of high-tech libraries stand out among the milestones. On the security front, the government’s efforts to combat Naxalism have been noteworthy, with over 200 militants neutralized and 37 new security camps established.

 

Progress in education, infrastructure, and rural development further underscore the government’s developmental thrust. The transformation of Chhattisgarh under Sai’s leadership has begun, though much remains to be done. As the state charts this new path, it is crucial that the administration remains focused and unwavering in its goals. Sai’s leadership, anchored in the mantra of Modi Ki Guarantee, offers hope for a Chhattisgarh that is prosperous, transparent, and free from corruption. With the Chief Minister at the helm, the state stands poised for a brighter future, one rooted in welfare, trust, and inclusive growth.
