Kareena Thapa of Amravati is now a proud recipient of Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar. 17-year-old Kareena received the honour at the hands of President of India Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Thursday. In May this year, the teenager had jumped into a burning flat of an apartment in Kathora area of Amravati and pulled out LPG cylinder from the house, thereby avoiding a bigger tragedy and saving 70 families of Jai Amba Apartment.

Taking note of Kareena’s exceptional work, which showed courage and alertness, a proposal was sent to the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development through the District Collector’s office and she was selected for the award based on the laid down criteria. The award function was organised on the occasion of ‘Veer Bal Din’ by the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development in memory of Sahibzada Zorawar Singh and Sahibzada Fateh Singh, sons of Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Guru of Sikh for the country.

The function was attended by Annapurna Devi, Union Minister of Women and Child Development, Savitri Thakur, Minister of State, and Anil Malik, Secretary. Total 17 children of the country were honoured in various categories at the hands of President Murmu on the occasion. The recipients were children of India who have left a mark in the fields of sports, social service, science and technology, environment, art and culture and research. The children also met Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The award comprises a medal, a plaque and a certificate.
