With a view to continue the tradition of Ekadashi of Aashadh (according to Hindi calendar), Marathi Sahitya Academy on Wednesday organised an Abhang singing event titled ‘Bolava Vitthal’ at Madhya Pradesh Tribal Museum. The event started by the lightning of a lamp witnessed the performance of Sursangam group of Abhang singers from Nagpur performing under the direction of Sachin Dhomne.

They sung semi-classical Marathi Abhangas which made the whole environment spiritual and made the audience immerse in the devotion of Lord Vitthal. Notably, in the Marathi community, on the occasion of Ashadhi Ekadashi, Dindi Yatra (procession) is traditionally organised, in which a procession is taken out while performing Hari Sankirtan (chanting the name of god) with traditional costumes and musical instruments. Famous Abhangas are also often sung in this. As per the artists, ‘Abhang’ means that which does not break. Such is the continuously flowing fountain of words. All the saints have given guidance in their own words for the uplift of the society through Abhang. Several Abhangas namely Majhe Maher Pandhari, Devachiya Dwari, Sundar Te Dhyan and others were performed during the event.
