Amid reports of displaying names of shop owners mandatory in Ujjain, local governance came forward and issued direction that there is no such order issued by the Ujjain Municipal Corporation. Talking to ‘The Hitavada’, the official stated that a few media organisations have reported that in Ujjain in view of Kanwar Yatra it has been ordered that shop establishments have to display name of owners. Their statement also highlighted that there will be no penalty on them in case of violation of the order to display name. Notably, a few local leaders also made such claims but till evening they took a U-turn. Violators will have to pay Rs 2,000 fine for the first offence and Rs 5,000 if they defy this order for the second time.

The information was given on behalf of Ujjain Municipal Corporation on Saturday directed shop owners to display their names and mobile numbers outside their establishments in the ancient city, a directive coming on the heels of a similar order by the BJP Government in UP for eateries along Kanwar Yatra route. Soon after the reports, the State Government came forward, the Department of Urban Development and Housing has clarified that no such directive has been issued by the Department of Urban Development and Housing at this Government level regarding writing name of the shop owner on boards of the shops on the route of Kawar passengers within the urban area.

The Department said that there were reports coming from some bodies that names of shop owners are being compulsorily written on shops on the route of Kanwar pilgrims, the Department directed all the city bodies to stay away from the illusion. Boards can be put up at shops under Madhya Pradesh Outdoor Advertisement Media Rules, 2017. There is no compulsion to display name of the shop owner on these boards.
