Dynamic kamala

time and tide

MRS. Kamala Harris, Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, no doubt, is a dynamic personality. That she managed to convince the overall leadership of the party to make President Mr. Joe Biden to step aside and make way for her to come in as the party’s official nomination, cannot be described as an act of just politics. In other words, this development should be considered as rather a coup than political smartness. And once she secured the Democratic Party’s nomination, Mrs. Kamala Harris also started a well-crafted fund raising programme that brought to her campaign a such as 200 million dollars inside of a week, which is a record sum even by American standard. It means, the fight between Mrs. Kamala Harris and former President and Republican Party’s nominee Mr. Donald Trump is going to be epic proportions, to say the least. The political narrative Mrs. Harris is trying to whip up is as regards constitution of the US running the risk of damaged or dented at the hands of Mr. Trump may not be acceptable to many. For, when electoral discourse enters such a phase, it only damages the larger national interests. Minus this risk, however, Mrs. Kamala Harris may prove to be a tough opponent for Mr. Donald Trump.

Reassessment

THE suggestion by a few experts that counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir need to be reassessed in view of the challenges posed by terrorists in recent times, may be found by some as potentially correct. On professional counts, such an exercise may have its own worth. However, it can said safely that the current measures, too, are not without their merits. The current spurt in terrorist activity has a strong political thrust from anti-India forces across the border. In such a condition, the spurt may continue some time. But that does not mean that the current counter-insurgency measures are not successful. Factually, the world has often recognised that such measures require a lot of patience on the part of the security forces. Nobody can expect an immediate success in such measures. It must be said safely that the current measures are beginning to bear good fruit, no matter the sacrifices Indian bravehearts are making. These are costs of such measures. Yet, in the long term, security forces will succeed in curbing the current spurt in terrorist activity in Jammu and Kashmir. A review may be welcome, but only as part of regular monitoring of any such operations.
