UNION Home Minister Mr. Amit Shah has hit the bull’s eye in describing illicit drug trade as a global issue. His statement is bold enough to be taken cognisance of by all the countries in the world. So far, none of the high functionaries in the Government of India has spoken of the narcotics trade in this vein. Barring the reference to Punjab, the illicit drug trade has not been linked to terrorism directly so far. But, there has been no denying also to the fact that the proceeds of illicit drug trade are used to spread terror, fund Left Wing Extremism, and also to foment trouble with an intention to obstruct the country’s economic growth.
There exists a wider nexus between those in narcotics trade and terrorism, and this spans across border. India has started taking action against narco-terror nexus. However, she faced difficulties in acting against networks that operate from other countries. But, the problem is not restricted to India alone. There are many countries where younger population is getting ruined, affecting the growth prospects of respective countries. Hence, the import of Mr. Shah’s statement should be that the world powers need to form a broader alliance to destroy the narco-terror nexus operating across borders.
