Deceased identified through DNA test Case of two different families claiming senior citizen’s body
Khapa Correspondent :
KHAPA Police on Thursday confirmed that the body of a man found eight days ago in the Kanhan River at Dongeghat, Rangaripura, has been identified as 74-year-old Madhorao Nakhate from Chhatrapur, taluka Saunsar, district Chhindwara, Madhya Pradesh. The identity was confirmed after the DNA samples of the deceased matched with those of his family members.
The highly decomposed body of the septuagenarian was discovered in the Kanhan River on August 21. However, the identity could not be immediately established leading to a complicated situation when two families came forward, each claiming the deceased as their missing relative.
The incident had caused significant concern in Khapa and the surrounding areas, particularly after the body was sent to the Government Medical College & Hospital, Nagpur, for post-mortem examination.
With both families adamant in their claims, the police were left in a quandary, unsure of how to proceed.
After consultations with senior officials of Nagpur (Rural) Police, Police Station Officer (Khapa), Vishal Giri decided to conduct a DNA test to resolve
the dispute. DNA samples from the deceased were compared with those from both families. The results conclusively identified the deceased as Madhorao Nakhate.
As the body was highly decomposed, the police had already performed the last rites according to the rules. The family of Madhorao Nakhate was informed of the DNA test results bringing closure to the case.
