The Sarangarh-Bilaigarh district has once again been bestowed with an opportunity to bask in glory. Heerabai Jhureka Baghel, a talented Dokra Bell Metal artist from the village panchayat of Baiginidih, has been selected for the prestigious National Handicraft Award from Chhattisgarh. This news has brought immense joy and pride to the local residents. District Collector Dharmesh Sahu, along with journalists, the sarpanch, and well-wishers, extended heartfelt congratulations to Heerabai. The district is elated to witness the recognition of Dokra Bell Metal artistry at a national level, further solidifying its pride.

The Dokra Bell Metal craftsmanship of Baiginidih, a village panchayat in Sarangarh, has not only captivated Chhattisgarh, but also gained appreciation across India and abroad. This is not the first time the artists from this region have earned accolades, with prior recognitions coming their way. Once again, the district has been honoured with Heerabai being selected for the National Award in the Dokra Bell Metal craft category by the Office of the Development Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, New Delhi. Notably, her husband, Minketan Baghel, is also a skilled artist in this craft, having showcased their work not only in India but internationally, promoting the glory of Sarangarh Bilaigarh. Previously, Heerabai was honoured by the Chhattisgarh government in 2011-12 for her excellence in Bell Metal art, while her husband Minketan was recognised by former Chief Minister Dr Raman Singh in 2006-07. They also represented Chhattisgarh’s Bell Metal craftsmanship on international platforms in 2018 and 2022 respectively. Upon receiving the news of her selection for the award, a delighted Heerabai expressed her gratitude, stating, “My father and husband are my sources of inspiration. My father, Bhulau Jhureka, who taught me Dokra Bell Metal craftsmanship, deserves full credit for this award.

After my marriage, my husband, Minketan Baghel, has constantly encouraged me to advance and innovate, leading to this proud moment.” Heerabai also highlighted the administrative support she received during the selection process. “Various administrative formalities were required for this award, and I received immense help from former Sub-Divisional Magistrate Aniket Sahu. Additionally, from caste certificate assistance to overall support, our village panchayat secretary, Balbhadra Patel, has always stood by my family and me, enabling me to achieve this national recognition,” she shared.
