This is in response to the perfect write-up and observation by Aayushi Shahu on ‘Why Nagpur’s Traffic is worse than ever’, who saw a lot of difference in road traffic in India and UK. But there seems a sincere wish that there has to be improvement in Nagpur’s traffic which is far from the required traffic sense by one and all. Many times, The Hitavada publishes pictures of bad roads, chaotic traffic at squares, jams due to accumulated rain water, non-functional traffic signals, haphazard parking of two and four-wheelers, broken footpaths etc. Of course, some patch-up action is taken by authorities perhaps to show that they are aware of their duties. But it is not the authorities or traffic police alone to be blamed for such worse situation.

The public on road is equally responsible for such mess as most of them don't have traffic sense. The rules are there, but that should be followed by all for smooth flow of vehicles on road. Ignoring red traffic signals, 3 sitters on two-wheelers, jam-packed autos, talking on mobile while driving, avoiding use of helmet, poor streetlights, stray dogs and cows... All these factors contribute to such worse conditions. Many law-abiders, however, have to face risks of getting injured through no fault of theirs. In foreign countries, we hardly find any traffic police at squares but traffic is smoothly regulated. The reason, people follow traffic rules and there is quick action and fines on spot for violates. The cameras put up at squares act as vigilant traffic police truely speaking. Let us hope for better but it should not be a distant dream looking to our habits and ‘chalata hai’ mentality.
