As the city is witnessing summer scorch in March itself, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is all set to handle the challenge of heatwave.
Dr Abhijit Chaudhari, Municipal Commissioner and Administrator,
has issued directives to various departments including Health, Garden, Social Welfare, Water Supply, Fire and Emergency Services to brace up to tackle and curb
heat-related incidents in the city
during summer.
NMC will install green nets at major squares of the city and also ensure the facility of water sprinklers at some public places including railway station, Ganeshpeth bus stand and other places to provide respite to the citizens from the summer scorch,
As part of precautionary measures, the civic body has developed remedial plans at multiple levels for the well-being of citizens.
Following the directives by the Municipal Commissioner, all civic departments have been assigned specific responsibilities. Departments such as Health, Garden, Social Development, Water Supply, and Disaster Management have been issued appropriate instructions.
All medical services have been strengthened as part of the preventive measures. A sufficient stock of medicines has been made available at all health centres for the treatment of heatstroke victims, and medical staff has been trained accordingly.
Additionally, the Garden Department will keep all gardens open from 12 noon to 4 pm daily, providing rest areas and drinking water for citizens seeking shade and relief from the heat.
The civic body has also ordered afternoon leave for all construction workers, ensuring compliance. The Social Development Department is arranging shelter for homeless citizens. The Disaster Management Department has ensured that firefighting equipment will be readily available in case of fires in buildings, godowns, or factories. The Electricity Department is working to prevent power outages during peak afternoon hours, while the Transport Department has provided shade and drinking water at city bus stations.
Heat Safety Tips
Avoid stepping out under the sun, unless necessary. When out, take proper precautions n Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, ORS, lemon water, or buttermilk regularly n Wear light, loose, and breathable clothes. Use sunglasses, umbrella, or a hat for protection n Always carry a water bottle when travelling and cover head, neck, and face with a wet cloth if needed n Keep home cool using damp curtains, fans, or coolers n Never leave children or pets inside closed, parked vehicles n Avoid wearing dark, tight, or thick clothing
