A youth was killed while four, including his sister, were injured when a Mahindra 700 SUV fell off the flyover near Butibori T-point area on Wardha Road. The accident occurred on Friday when the driver of the vehicle took a wrong turn on the flyover towards Chandrapur while heading towards Nagpur. The confused driver, in an attempt to fix the mistake, lost control of the SUV. In the process, the speeding SUV hit the protective wall of the flyover and plunged 20 feet below.

The deceased was identified as Arinjay Abhijit Shrawane (18). He died instantly due to the impact. His sister, Akshata Abhijit Shrawane (22), sustained serious injuries. The siblings are children of Abhijit Shrawane, owner of Shrawane Emporium in Wardha. Other injured persons included Saksham Vijay Bafna (19), a resident of Gandhi Chowk, Sadar, Nagpur; Himanshu Vijay Bafna (22), a resident of Kamptee; and Manas Shailendra Badani (22), also from Gandhi Chowk, Sadar, Nagpur. Saksham Bafna was driving the SUV (MH-31-FU-8982). Police officials said that Akshata had completed her BE and worked in a company in Solapur, while Arinjay was a Class XII (Commerce) student. Saksham, Himanshu, and Manas had gone to Wardha to pick up Arinjay and Akshata for celebrating Holi in Nagpur. While heading towards Nagpur, Saksham mistakenly took a wrong turn on flyover in Butibori at 1 pm on Friday. Instead of taking the first left turn, he took the second left turn. On realising the mistake, he got confused and tried to correct it. As he sped up to make the correction, he lost control over the wheels.

The SUV hit the protective wall of the flyover and fell off. The vehicle crashed onto trees before hitting the ground. The impact was severe, and the SUV was badly damaged. The passengers sustained serious injuries. Staff from Butibori Police Station, led by Police Inspector Prataprao Bhosle, rushed to the scene and began rescue operation. The injured were taken to various hospitals in the city. Arinjay was declared dead by doctors. Butibori Police have registered a case and launched an investigation. The family of the deceased is in deep shock over the tragedy.

Seat belts important

The Mahindra SUV is registered in the name of Vijay Bafna. While the two people in the front row, including the driver, were wearing seat belts, the three people in the second row were not. As a result, the airbags in the front row got deployed after the accident, but the airbags in the second row did not, which led to more serious injuries for the second-row passengers.
