Nagpur was rocked by violent riots Monday night which plunged the city into chaos and fear. As clashes intensified, the police have imposed a curfew in riot-hit areas to restore order. The worst-hit areas were in Central Nagpur where violence spread rapidly and left residents terrified. Commissioner of Police Dr Ravinder Kumar Singal issued a curfew order at around 4.30 am on Tuesday to prevent further unrest.
The situation remains tense but under control in the riot-hit areas. Security forces are on high alert to ensure that law and order is maintained across the city.
CP Dr Singal announced that curfew has been enforced in sensitive areas to restore peace.
The curfew is in effect in multiple police station areas, including Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shanti Nagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imambada, Yashodhara Nagar and Kapil Nagar. Only essential movement is allowed and police officers will decide whether vehicles can pass through restricted areas. On Tuesday evening, Quick Response Team of the city police took out a route march through these areas to ensure that order was maintained.
The police have set up ‘fix points’ in 11 highly sensitive and 19 other sensitive locations across the city. Armed cops are patrolling these areas 24x7. Additionally, a special cyber police team has been assigned to track and take action against anti-social elements indulged in spreading false information on social media.
The riots resulted in major property damage, with more than 50 vehicles vandalised or set on fire which includes eight cars, an excavator and 40 two-wheelers. The police have registered five cases against the rioters for harming social harmony, damaging public property and attacking people.
So far, 50 people have been arrested and police continue

Curfew affects businesses
With the curfew in place, roads connecting to the riot-affected areas have been blocked. The police have put up barricades at entry points and prohibited entry to outsiders to maintain law and order. Quick Response Teams and Riot Control Police (RCP) have also been stationed in the affected zones to prevent further violence.
Shops in the curfew-imposed areas remained closed throughout the day.
The effect of the curfew was also seen in other parts of the city, as many business owners chose to shut their shops to avoid any trouble.
Delayed police response irks residents of Hansapuri
Residents of Hansapuri expressed frustration over the slow police response. Despite making several calls for help on Monday night, they claimed that officers did not arrive on time to tackle the situation. Rioters burned 16 two-wheelers and even set fire to a hospital late at night which left locals feeling helpless.
Clean-up begins
Thousands of stones which were thrown during the riots covered the streets on Monday night. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation immediately started cleanup operations and cleared the roads to restore normalcy in the city. Police have assured the public that they are doing everything necessary to maintain law and order and take strict action against those responsible for the violence.
34 cops, including 3 DCPs, injured
During the violence, 34 police personnel, including three Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs), were injured. DCPs Niketan Kadam, Archit Chandak, and Shashikant Satav were among those injured in the riot.

“A trolley full of stones was recovered from the spot. What does this show? It has been observed that stones were stocked in houses and weapons have been seized. This attack appears to be a well-planned action. The government is making every effort to maintain law and order in the State, but it needs cooperation from the public. We are very clear in our stand that the guilty won’t be spared,” stated Chief
Minister Devendra Fadnavis in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday at Mumbai.
“Maharashtra is a ‘progressive state’ and caste discrimination has no place here. An incident that disrupted the social fabric of the State took place in Nagpur on March 17. This incident rattled the peace of the State. Currently, various festivals of all religions are going on. The citizens should celebrate these festivals with restraint and maintain peace,” added Fadnavis.
Fadnavis said the Vicky Kaushal-starrer film ‘Chhaava’, based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, reignited people’s emotions against the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb.
The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) said it won’t tolerate any attempts to glorify Aurangzeb and claimed the Nagpur violence was planned.
Informing the House, Fadnavis said, “In the Nagpur incident, the police had gone to restore peace. They were also attacked by the mob. In such a situation, no one who takes law and order into their own hands and assaults the police will be spared. Strict legal action will be taken against him.”
Chief Minister Fadnavis said, “On March 17 at 11.30 am in Nagpur city, some organisations protested, by removing a symbolic grave of grass stalks in the Mahal area demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s grave. Ganeshpeth Police registered a case in this regard. However, rumors spread about this protest and some social groups gathered in the Hansapuri area and staged a violent protest.”
“12 two-wheelers were burned in this area. Also, two JCBs, cranes and four-wheelers were set on fire in the Bhaldarpura area. Stones were also pelted here. In all these incidents, 33 policemen and five civilians were injured. Of these, three civilians were released after treatment, while two civilians are undergoing treatment. Also, three officers of the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police were injured. It is seen that one officer was beaten with an axe. The police had to use tear gas to pacify the crowd. Also, peace had to be established using mild force,” Fadnavis shared the details.
Three cases have been registered in Ganeshpeth police station in this regard and the process of registering two cases in Tehsil police station is underway. Curfew has been imposed under 11 police
stations in Nagpur city.
Five teams of State Reserve Police Force have been deployed. Also, check posts have been set up at the entry level in this area, the Chief Minister informed on this occasion. The Government is making every effort to maintain law and order in the state, Chief Minister said on this occasion.
