In the serene village of Sihawa, nestled amidst the verdant landscapes of Dhamtari district, lies the Karneshwar Mahadev Temple Complex, a site that resonates with echoes of ancient faith, rich heritage, and architectural grandeur. Approximately 140 kilometres from Raipur, this sacred enclave, a confluence of mythology, natural wonder, and historical artistry, draws devotees, historians, and travelers alike into its timeless embrace. The complex, comprising five distinct temples, is dominated by the majestic Karneshwar Mahadev Temple. These structures, commissioned by King Karna (or Karnadev) of the Somvanshi dynasty of Kanker during the 12th century CE, bear witness to the architectural prowess of their era.

The Karneshwar Temple, named after its royal patron, stands as a testament to the sophisticated craftsmanship and sacred geometry employed by the artisans of that period. Archaeologically significant, the site offers a glimpse into the temple-building styles prevalent during the Somvanshi reign. The finely carved stone structures and their meticulous spatial arrangement reflect a deep understanding of architectural principles and spiritual symbolism. Adding to the mystique of the complex is the natural water tank, or Jalkund, located near the temples. This unique feature, where water steadily flows upwards from the earth, continues to baffle and amaze visitors. Local lore attributes healing properties to the tank’s water, claiming it can cure leprosy and other skin ailments. This belief draws spiritual seekers and those seeking physical healing, adding a layer of profound spiritual significance to the site. Sihawa’s spiritual significance is further enhanced by its association with Shringakoot, the sacred hill believed to be the origin of the Mahanadi River (Chitrotpala). Legend has it that Rishi Shringi’s ashram was situated at the river’s source, imbuing the area with mythological importance. The convergence of natural wonder, historical architecture and ancient mythology creates a unique and compelling experience for visitors.

Recognising its cultural and historical value, the Department of Culture and Archaeology, Government of Chhattisgarh, has designated the Karneshwar Temple Complex as a protected heritage site. Each year, during Mahashivratri, the temple becomes the epicenter of a grand celebration, attracting thousands of devotees to the annual fair. The event serves as a vibrant tribute to Lord Shiva, reaffirming the temple’s enduring spiritual relevance. The public awareness of this sacred site is largely attributed to the dedicated efforts of Jitendra Nakka, whose work has shone a light on this lesser-known yet profoundly significant spiritual landmark of Chhattisgarh. His efforts have helped preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of the region. The Karneshwar Mahadev Temple Complex, with its blend of historical grandeur, spiritual sanctity, and natural wonder, stands as a captivating destination, inviting visitors to delve into the heart of Chhattisgarh’s rich cultural tapestry.
