In today’s digital world, everyone uses internet and almost everyone uses social media. But the social media is both, a boon and a bane. It is a boon when used responsibly and for positive reasons but a bane if not used responsibly.
One major issue with the social media is how freely t is being used to vent one’s unreasonable anger. There is so much hate even over things that should not ideally bother one.
Spreading hate on social media is nothing but cyberbullying. Fanning rumours, posting embarrassing pictures or videos, sharing someone’s private information, (doxing), giving threats, all of it comes under cyberbullying.
The most worrisome part of cyberbullying is that almost 85 percent of its victims are children. It can lead to emotional and physical harm, loss of self-esteem, feelings of shame and anxiety, lack of concentration and learning difficulties. Now,that we know about cyberbullying we should also find solution to it. If one is being bullied on social media, one should talk about it with a trusted person. Report the bullies and their content on that platform. Keep a track of their hateful content and report about them on www.cybercrime.gov.in Or just call Cyber Crime helpline-1930.
Now,we know the solutions too but we should also know why we should not cyberbully people.
Many people think that spreading hate online is not a big deal. But it can have long-lasting negative impact on the person concerned like anxiety, depression and stress related disorders. Let it be known that cyberbullying is a crime. It is a punishable offence. Punishment for cyberbullying is imprisonment of upto two years, or with a fine, or both. If the threat is to cause death or grievous hurt, the punishment can extend to seven years.
