The Muslim Youth Federation (MYF) and Minorities Democratic Party (MDP) are currently under investigation in connection with the violent riots that erupted in Nagpur on March 17. Police officials revealed that they are scrutinising the bank accounts and financial transactions of both organisations to uncover their funding sources and operational mechanisms.
The police are investigating claims that the two groups may have played a role in inciting the violence by spreading provocative messages on social media which allegedly fueled unrest. Sources indicate that key office-bearers of MYF and MDP are now under the radar of the Nagpur City Police in relation to their involvement in the riot.
As of Friday, the total number of arrested accused in connection with the Nagpur riots has risen to 133. Among those detained in the last two days is Faizan Khatib, a resident of Akola, who travelled to Nagpur for Ramzan but got involved in the riots. He was arrested by police.
In another development, Fahim Khan, the city president of the MDP, was re-arrested by the Crime Branch team on a production warrant issued by the court. He was transferred from the jail and will remain in PCR until March 31 for further questioning.
