Dr VN Waghmare assumed charge of Director, ICAR-Central Institute for Cotton Research (CICR), on April 4. Dr Waghmare was earlier Head of the Crop Improvement Division at ICAR-CICR. He has been selected by the Agricultural Scientists Recruitment Board, New Delhi, as Director of ICAR-CICR, Nagpur, the very Institute in which he joined as a Scientist (Genetics and Plant Breeding) back in November 1994. He was Director (Acting) of the Institute for three years during 2017 to 2020. He obtained his M Sc and Ph D Degrees in Genetics from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. Dr Waghmare has a rich research experience of more than 31 years in ICAR and has to his credit several research publications in National and International journals of repute, books, book chapters, many popular articles and technical bulletins.
 
Dr Waghmare is also a Foreign Consultant/International Expert for the Uzbekistan Cotton Improvement Project. With this experience of about 31 years in cotton research, Dr Waghmare is expected to take the ICAR-Central Institute for Cotton Research to new heights. In the current scenario of cotton cultivation and declining production and productivity over the last one decade and several challenges facing the cotton scenario in the country, he has a vision to bring out region-specific varieties and hybrids for cultivation with adoption of better crop production and protection practices including High Density Planting System (HDPS) so as to enhance the production and productivity across all the cotton growing states in the country.
