Chhattisgarh’s celebrated marathon runner Bhagwat Ram Netam, fondly hailed as Bhilai’s ‘Milkha Singh’, has once again brought immense pride to the region by securing multiple medals in two prestigious marathon events recently held in New Delhi. His latest achievements reaffirm his stature as one of the foremost master athletes in the country and underscore the sporting excellence nurtured by SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant. Bhagwat Ram Netam won a Gold medal in the 51 to 60-year age group category at the PNB Half Marathon Delhi 2025, conducted at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, New Delhi. The event was organized to commemorate the Foundation Day of Punjab National Bank and aimed at promoting physical fitness, national unity, and digital empowerment. Competing against seasoned veterans, Bhagwat Ram emerged at the top of his category. Adding further to his triumphs Bhagwat Ram participated in the 4th edition of the Khelo Masters National Games, held in New Delhi, organized by the Khelo Masters Games Foundation, the national-level event celebrated fitness, discipline, and sportsmanship among master athletes, especially those in middle age and beyond.
 
In this event, Bhagwat Ram Netam secured three Bronze medals in athletics, demonstrating his versatility and relentless dedication to sports. He completed the 5,000-meter marathon in an impressive time of 19.2 minutes, earning a Bronze medal. In the 1,500-meter race, he clocked a time of 5.21 minutes, once again claiming a Bronze. He also secured a third Bronze medal in the 3,000-meter walkathon, which he completed in 35 minutes, exemplifying his remarkable stamina and disciplined training. Earning these achievements Netam has now also got qualified to take part in the upcoming international Athletics Championship in Shri Lanka and other international Championships of similar stature. Behind these outstanding performances lies the collective commitment and sustained efforts of the SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant (SAIL-BSP), which has long fostered a culture of holistic development, integrating sports, culture, education, and health into its organizational ethos.
 
The Bhilai Steel Plant fraternity, including the management and members of the SAIL-BSP Collective, extended heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Bhagwat Ram, whose achievements continue to inspire generations within and beyond the plant. Born on December 10, 1971, in Hathod village of Balod district of Chhattisgarh state, Bhagwat Ram Netam began his professional association with SAIL-Bhilai Steel Plant as a Trade Apprentice in 1993-94. Through consistent hard work and the support of his mentors and family, he rose to prominence, currently serving as an Engineering Associate at Sinter Plant-2. Alongside his official duties, he has relentlessly pursued his passion for long-distance running, winning accolades in cross-country and marathon events across the country. Known not only for his athletic accomplishments but also for his commitment to social empowerment, Bhagwat Ram has emerged as a guiding light for youth, especially from the Gond community. A strong advocate for fitness and sports participation, he continues to motivate aspiring athletes, demonstrating that dedication and perseverance can overcome all odds.
