Nagpur district has crossed the milestone of 26,000 households under Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Mofat Veej Yojana generating 105 MW of solar energy. The scheme was launched to supply electricity free of cost for households consuming electricity upto 300 units. The State Government has priotirised the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Mofat Veej Yojana. Rooftop solar power projects result in zero electricity bills as they generate more electricity than a household requires.

The surplus electricity generated can be sold to Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co Ltd (MahaVitaran). Under the Pradhan Mantri Suryaghar Mofat Veej Yojana, solar power projects are installed on the roofs of houses for electricity generation. For this, the Central Government provides a subsidy based on the capacity of the solar power project of Rs 30,000 per kw for a one kw project; Rs 60,000 for a two kw project; and Rs 78,000 for a three kw project.

The maximum subsidy is Rs 78,000, which is directly provided. MahaVitaran provides net meters to consumers free of charge. In Nagpur district, a total of 26,588 houses had solar power projects installed by April 16, with combined capacity of 105.45 MW. On April 16 alone, solar power generation projects were installed at 212 houses in the district. So far, 179,753 houses across the State have had solar power generation projects installed, generating a total capacity of 651.42 MW. Nagpur district leads with the highest number of installations at 26,588 houses. Of the total solar power generation projects in the State, Nagpur district accounts for a significant 14.79 per cent, and its solar power generation capacity represents 16.42 per cent.
