For enhancing crew comfort and operational safety, Electric Loco Shed, Ajni, under the Nagpur Division of Central Railway, has introduced unisex waterless urinal facilities in Ajni-based WAG-9 goods electric locomotives.
Loco pilots operating freight trains often work continuously for seven hours or more without access to basic sanitation. The lack of onboard toilet facilities leads to operational challenges, as crew members may be forced to disembark at remote or unscheduled locations, which can compromise train safety and punctuality.
This issue is particularly sensitive for female loco pilots. To address this critical concern, Ajni Loco Shed has successfully installed waterless urinals in 26 WAG-9 locomotives, with plans to extend the facility to 35 more in the near future.
The newly-introduced system comprises an epoxy-coated, odourless unisex urinal pot equipped with a stainless steel wire mesh, perfume dispenser, and urinal mats. It also features a micro controller-based unit that automatically switches the LED light and exhaust fan based on occupancy.
Additional features include an auto-sensor hand sanitiser, UV-controlled disinfectant system, safety hand rail and enhanced ventilation, ensuring hygienic and user-friendly operation.
Crucially, the urinal system has been designed with safety as the top priority—it is enabled only when the locomotive is stationary and the brakes are applied, thereby ensuring there is no compromise on train operation safety. This initiative marks a progressive step in improving working conditions for loco pilots, especially during long hauls, and reflects Central Railway Nagpur Division’s commitment to innovation, employee welfare and operational excellence.
