Fire destroyed property worth Rs 5.75 crore in a wood products manufacturing unit at Maa Umiya Industrial Estate, Kapsi, Bhandara Road. The fire incident occurred on Ram Navami on Sunday. Presence of combustible material helped the spread of flames in the entire unit. Given the intensity of fire, all the fire brigade units including that of NMC, NMRDA, MIHAN, and nearby Municipal Council were given call to douse the raging inferno. The Fire and Emergency Services Department of NMC got the call about the fire at M/s Atul Wood Products. The factory was engaged in manufacturing of wooden ply and other wood-based products.

The unit was stocked with raw wood, wood dust and other raw material. The flames raged through entire unit and given its spread all the stations of NMC's Fire Brigade stations had a major fire situation at hand. The fire brigade got a call around 1.10 am and immediately fire fighting teams from Kalamna, Lakadganj, Sakkardara, Civil Lines, Trimurty Nagar, were rushed to the spot. Seeing the gravity of situation, additional tenders were called from Kalmeshwar, Mauda, MIHAN, Wadi and NTPC Fire Brigade units.

Nearly the 100 fire fighting staff battled the flames and sprayed water from all sides to keep it at bay. Altogether the fire brigade team utilised 52 tanks of water to douse the flames that ranged on till wee hours of Sunday. The fire fighters had a tough time in controlling the spiralling flames. The reason for fire is still under probe. Initial estimate put the loss at Rs 5.75 crore and the damage items including machineries, tin shed at the factory, wood stock and raw material stored there.
