Much-awaited event of city XVI Annual Flower Show to begin on 7th

‘Every flower is a soul blossoming in nature’…. Keeping this in our spirits, the Department of Botany, Hislop College will organise its XVI Annual flower show on December 7 and 8. This is a beautiful interlude that transforms college premises into an ecosystem that of a wide range of healthy flowering plants under one roof. It has been our continuous endeavour to spread this beauty to the citizens of orange city for the last fifteen years. The preparation for every forthcoming show starts immediately after the culmination of the present show.
The planning and ground work is very systematic and is carried out in a phased manner. Natures being the architect of this show, the various components eventually decide on the overall representation of the show. Climate change has been very drastic over these years, thus holding a show of this magnitude has become a challenge for all of us in the department. One cannot control the weather. Excessive and frequent rains over a long period, gives us very little scope to deal with the situation. Plants can tolerate short periods of saturated soil, but extended times of sogginess are stressful. It leads to the overall poor performance of a plant in saturated conditions.
The department was able to overcome all these odds and put up the show this year, thus confirming the age old saying, 'Where flowers bloom so does hope'. The colourful panorama includes a wide range seasonal but Hislop excels in its display of Chrysanthemums. This year is no different; the exhibition includes petunias, begonias, calendula, marigold and zinnia, besides the very beautiful and exotic chrysanthemums. Vermicompost an integral part of the show is produced in-house through the natural composting followed by fortification.
A unique feature of Hislop Flower Show is the involvement of its students in cultivation, growth and maintenance of this wide collection. This has been possible through a Skill Oriented Course on Floriculture run by the Department. To instill the love of nature and to advocate our go green theme we organise a sit and draw competition "Papilion". Young artists from various schools participate adding a beautiful dimension to the show.
The annual event is an outcome of hard work put in by the Botany Department students under the guidance of Dr Mousumi Bhowal and other faculty members, Parama Majumdar, Dr Shivani Dongarwar, Dr Mayank Varun, Deepika Sarda, Nikita Phule and long hours devoted by the garden staff. The Show, however would not have reached its sixteenth year without the guidance of Dr Jayant Agrawal, Secretary, Hislop Education Society and the leadership of Dr Prashant Shelke, Officiating Principal, Hislop College. The Vice-Principals Dr Pratik Michael and Dr Ajay Yoel too have steered the working force to make the event successful. This year's show will be held on December 7 and 8, and will be open for guests from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. on both the days.
