Staff Reporter,
Anti-ragging committee of Maulana Azad National Institute Technology (MANIT) called the ragging accused and victims to re-register their statement on Monday. After identifying the accused and victims, committee registered their statement but there were differences due to which enquiring officers were confused. They recalled both senior and junior students to re-register their comments over the issue. There are about six junior and senior students in the ragging complaint filed on UGC helpline. The committee will prepare final report of the case after recording the statement of both group of students and send it further the UGC. Last week, the complaint was filed a second year student against fourth year students. Complainant has alleged manhandling on senior students. Victim students have filed their grievances on UGC helpline and sought immediate relief from torture of seniors.
While recording statement of both parties accused and complaint, anti ragging committee of the institute found that there were two juniors and four senior students involved in the dispute. MANIT officials said that they will complete their enquiry of the case by Tuesday and certain decision will be taken against the accused. The complaint has been forwarded to the college authorities for addressing the matter by the helpline. A detailed report of the action taken by college management against ragging menace has been also sought by the University Grants Commission (UGC) within 15 days. It may be mentioned that ragging complaints are continuously being reported from institutes across Madhya Pradesh. Last week a fourth semester student from Oriental Institute of Science and Technology filed ragging complaint against eighth semester students. He alleged that senior student passes unnecessary comment on him.
Even after several directions of UGC and higher education authorities, colleges in Madhya Pradesh fail to curb the ragging menace from their campus. However many of ragging cases have been proved as fake in previous complaint as students like present their personal dispute as ragging before authorities. Notably, UGC has already written higher educational institutes regarding ragging menace in colleges. The commission said to curb the ragging menace of campuses. In its circular UGC said, it is to bring into notice that ragging is a criminal offence and UGC has framed regulations on curbing the menace of ragging in higher educational institutions in order to prohibit, prevent and eliminate the courage of ragging.
These regulations are mandatory and all institutions are required to take necessary steps for its implementation in toto including the monitoring mechanism and any violence of these regulations will be viewed seriously. Commission said if any institute fail to take adequate steps to prevent ragging or does not act in accordance with these regulations or fails to punish perpetrators of incidents of ragging suitably, it will attract punitive action against itself by the UGC. The commission said all higher institutes are requested to step up anti-ragging mechanism by way of adequate publicity through various medium, constitution of anti-ragging committee and anti-ragging squad, setting up of anti-ragging cell, installing CCTV cameras at vital points, anti-ragging interaction workshops, updating all websites with nodal officers complete details, alarm bells etc. Regular interaction and counselling with the students, identification of trouble triggers and mention of anti-ragging warning in the institute prospectus and information booklets, brochures will be ensured.
