Madhya Pradesh opens six out of eight gates of Chaurai dam

The live storage of Totladoh crosses 180 mmc on Monday evening

Water cut of three-days-a-week is likely to be removed soon

Totladoh and Kamptee Khairi dams of Nagpur district which are responsible to supply water to Nagpur city finally crossed the water-level that is enough to cater to the drinking water need of the city till next summer. Thanks to the heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh for the last couple of weeks, the administration opened six out of eight gates of Chaurai dam that increased the water level of Totladoh and Kamptee Khairi dams in Nagpur district on Monday. After opening the gates, Pench reservoirs received 85 MMC water on Monday. Till Monday evening, the live storage of Totladoh dam touched the 180 MMC mark which is 18 per cent of total storage of the dam. Similarly, Kamptee Khairi had the live storage of 39.31 MMC.

Chaurai dam had 94 per cent live storage (396.19 MMC) as against total storage capacity of 421.2 MMC as on Monday morning. Keeping the water level in Chaurai dam in mind, the administration has decided to keep the six gates open till the end of monsoon season. With one month still to go for the conclusion of monsoon, Totladoh will get good amount of water for Nagpur district. With this improvement, the water cut of three-days-a-week that came into implementation from July 17 is likely to be removed now.

The city has been drawing water from dead stock since May 16 and the improvement in water level started when MP Government opened two gates of Chaurai dam a few days ago. Last year, Pench reservoirs did not get water from Chaurai dam as Chaurai dam got filled towards the end of monsoon only. Till August 15 last year, Chaurai dam had live storage of 66 per cent. While the capacity of Totladoh is 1,017 MMC, it has live storage of 180 MMC (18 per cent). Last year, at this time it was 23.14 per cent. Kamptee Khairi dam’s stock is 39.54 MMC (27.85 per cent) against the capacity of 142 MMC. It was 36.46 per cent last year.

Vidarbha to get more rains in next 24 hours The low pressure area over the central parts of the country is responsible for giving heavy rains in Vidarbha during the last 24 hours and the situation remains the same for one more day, revealed Skymet Weather in a press release. With 104 mm rains, Bramhapuri in Vidarbha has been observed as the rainiest place in the country on Monday.

As the weather system continues to persist, a few moderate spells are expected in Vidarbha on Tuesday as well. Gondia recorded 55 mm of rain, followed by Gadchiroli 49.2 mm, Wardha 47.2 mm, Yavatmal 9.2 mm, Chandrapur 9.2 mm, Akola 7.9 mm, Amravati 7.8 mm, Nagpur 6 mm, Buldhana 4 mm and Washim 2 mm in the last 24 hours. According to meteorologists, due to active Monsoon conditions, Vidarbha will continue to get a few moderate spells for the next 24 hours.

By tomorrow, Monsoon would become weak in Vidarbha as well and almost dry weather conditions with isolated light rains would be seen in other parts of Maharashtra. Another spell of rains may commence over Vidarbha region around August 29, in the wake of a fresh low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. This system, too, would move in the westerly direction, thus bringing in moderate spells to Vidarbha as well as Konkan and Goa.
