STEEL Employees Union (INTUC) emerged victorious while defeating the nearest rival Hindustan Steel Employees Union (CITU) by 607 votes in the election for recognised trade union of Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) through secret ballots. The election results were declared during early hours on Saturday following the counting held at Bhilai Technical Institute (BTI) of BSP. As per the results declared, after third and final round of counting of votes, INTUC managed to garner 4,447 votes while its nearest rival CITU scored 3,840 votes and Bhilai Ispat Mazdoor Sangh (BMS) was at the third position with 1,879 votes to its credit. The third trade union election in BSP also saw Ispat Shramik Manch’s position, dwindling down election by election, as it stood fourth among contesting trade unions.
In the first and second election it had secured second and third position. In the third election it was polled 1,653 votes in total. With declaration of first round results, however Steel Employees Union (INTUC) was leading its close rival with thin margin of 74 votes but it continued to swell and with declaration of second round the lead increased to 307 votes and with the final round INTUC topped the vote tally. The counting was in progress till early hours on Saturday at Bhilai Technical Institute (BTI), BSP. As per information received after counting of votes, following first and second round, Bhilai Ispat Majdoor Sangh, 342/473; Bhilai Shramik Sabha (HMS) 81/92; Bhilai Steel Majdoor Shabha (AITUC) 13/36; BSP Workers Union (Independent) 270/409, Steel Workers Union 57/89, Loktantrik Ispat Mazdoor Union (LOIMU) 21/46 and Centre of Steel Workers (AICCTU) 7/10 votes to their credit respectively.
The ballot boxes were collected and opened up under the close supervision of authorities concerned, including Returning Officer (RO) and Regional Labour Commissioner (RLC Central) Shoyeb H Sayyad, Assistant Returning Officer (ARO) and Assistant Labour Commissioner (ALC Central) Akhilesh Rai. The mixing and bundling process continued till late evening hours on Friday. The office bearers and members from most contesting trade unions were gathered near the counting centre and they were noticed speculating regarding the possible victory of trade union in the election after declaration of counting results of each round.
