“Now, students could open an account in National Academic Credit Bank (NACB) to get credit points of their hobbies or other extra-curricular activities. These credit points would help the students get their degrees easily,” said Vice Chairman of University Grants Commission (UGC) Dr Bhushan Patwardhan on Sunday. Dr Patwardhan was addressing as a chief guest of 96th foundation day programme of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) at University Convocation hall. Vice-Chancellor of RTM Nagpur University Dr S P Kane presided over.
Officiating pro-VC Dr Vinayak Deshpande was the guest of honour. Officiating Registrar Dr Neeraj Khati also shared dais. Stating that the proposal of UGC to establish National Academic Credit Bank in higher education would help students to pursue their hobbies, Dr Patwardhan elaborated, “If an engineering student needs say 150 credit points of which 120 are mandatory from the core subjects to finish the course. For the rest, he can accrue 30 points by doing hobby courses such as Aaarngetram, Tabla from a non-conventional institution or participating in sports activities.
Thus the students get 120 points or credits from his core subjects before time and can move on to the subsequent level without waiting to spend scheduled or stipulated time in the course by redeeming the 30 points earned.” “With the National Academic Credit Bank, gaining acceptance among the community, inter-university degrees to be a reality in the near future in India,” he added. Dr Patwardhan stated, “UGC has started taking various initiatives to make education ‘student centered.’ A new programme ‘Deeksharambh’ has been started. It will be a Student Induction Programme to help new students adjust and feel comfortable in the new environment, inculcate in them the ethos and culture of the institution, help them build bonds with other students and faculty members, and expose them to a sense of larger purpose and self-exploration.”
“The UGC is introducing ‘Quality Mandate’ for colleges and universities and wants them to achieve its objectives by 2022. These include NAAC accreditation, with a minimum score of 2.5, for all institutions. It wants higher educational institutions to improve graduate outcomes so that at least 50 per cent of students get employment, become self-employed or take up higher education”, he added. Dr Patwardhan stated, “UGC has initiated a self study mode software Swayam. This is a platform that facilitates hosting of all the courses, taught in classrooms from Class 9 till post-graduation to be accessed by anyone, anywhere at any time. All the courses are interactive, prepared by the best teachers in the country and are available, free of cost to any learner.
More than 1,000 specially chosen faculty and teachers from across the country have participated in preparing these courses.” Dr Kane in his presidential speech extended full support to UGC’s initiatives to make education students friendly.
