Autopsy suggested that the leopard might be a victim of poaching

A CARCASS of a leopardess was found in village Mani Guradia, around 15 kms away from Bhopal-Indore bypass, an official informed on Sunday. There are marks on the back of the leopardess which continues mystery behind the death. Officials suspect that it is a case of poaching due to marks on the body. It was a young leopardess and carcass was about a week old. Samples have been sent to laboratory for post-mortem.

Autopsy suggested that the leopard might be a victim of poaching. Wildlife experts said that last month a tigress was also entangled in net trapped by poachers around Bhopal jungle. However, later the tigress managed to escape. The Forest Department is still looking for the tigress but she has moved towards Ratapani jungle. Wildlife experts said that the two incidents prove presence of poachers around Bhopal jungle. They said the Forest Department should be on alert and security provisions need to be revised. A K Jhawar, Forest Ranger of Samardha, said, “It is about a week old carcass of female leopard. As weather conditions are cold, carcass was not decomposed.

We have performed last rites as per NTCA guidelines and further enquiry is going on to check actual cause of death. We have also increased security provisions in the area.” Locals said there was foul smell in village late on Saturday night and when they searched the area the carcass was spotted. Villagers informed about the carcass to the Forest Department. The team led by Forest Ranger A K Jhawar recovered the carcass. Locals of the area said there are many leopards around the village but poaching has been sighted for the first time.
