At least four animals have been choked to death within a month after being entangled in wire snare around Bhopal jungle. Out of these four animals, one leopard and a wild pig died on the spot while one tiger and a leopard were saved with quick response of forest team. In all the four cases, poachers used wire snare that is being used in clutch and brake of motor bikes. Recently, Forest Department has arrested a few poachers who accepted the crime.
The team has also recovered such wires from their possession that was being used to make the snare. A bike repairing shopkeeper at Eitkhedi said that many villagers visit the shop to purchase wire for repairing their bike. He said that a few of them also purchased the wire for fencing their crops in field. Officials of Forest Department said in past few cases, it has been noticed that poachers are using wire snare to kill the animals as it is quite easy.
As soon as animal put the paws in snare, he get trapped tightly. Last month, a tigress was caught in the wire snare in Bhanpur jungle of Samardha range. The tigress was injured and Forest Department searched the tigress for treatment but she was almost missing. On January 11, a leopard carcass was found in Mani Guradiya village.
The leopard was killed after being entangled in the wire snare. Two suspects have been arrested in this case. Last week, a leopard was found entangled in wire in Prempura area. However, the leopard escaped from the spot and forest team shifted him to Van Vihar National Park for treatment. On January 12, forest team recovered 30 kg meat of wild pig in Gunga area of Berasiya. The pig was poached with the help of wire. Talking to ‘The Hitavada’, CCF Ravindra Saxena said “separate teams have been formed to check the accused involved in animal killing. All people involved in making wire snare are being identified and soon culprit will be arrested.”
