Pankaj Atulkar, who got selected for IPS, feels that he can touch people’s lives

Unlike those who go for Civil Services with an aim, Pankaj Atulkar could only decide about it when he met Indian Administrative Services (IAS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) officers at the hostel of his college Kavikulguru Institute of Technology and Science. He was then doing BE in Mechanical Engineering. During his engineering, he had decided to go for core engineering job not in the software. But that meeting with those officers took a different turn. Now, Pankaj got selected for IPS, the dream he was nurturing for the last three years has finally come true.

“I had some doubts about writing Civil Services Examination. When my Principal asked me to attend those officials, I grabbed the opportunity and talked to them, cleared my doubts about civil services examination. Then and there I decided to go for this examination with full force,” Pankaj Atulkar told ‘The Hitavada’. Schooling of Pankaj and his brother Rahul who has done MBA was a bit disturbed as their father C B Atulkar, Executive Director (Technology) at MOIL had a transferable job. He and his wife Shashi, a homemaker, were worried about their children’s study. “I didn’t have to ask them to study. Both Pankaj and Rahul kept studying with responsibility.

They never came with flying colours but we did not insist on scoring high marks. For us, against all such odds both were doing their study was more satisfactory,” remarked C B Atulkar. Pankaj Atulkar after completing his engineering went to Delhi, rented a room and started preparing for Civil Services. He got first success as he cleared pre-lims, mains and then interview only to get selected for Indian Information Services. But he was not satisfied with it. He then decided to go for another attempt. In this particular attempt, the three services were in his mind--IAS, IFS and IPS. He took Geography as optional subject. Despite having engineering background why Pankaj chose Geography as his optional subject? “I like to observe things so Geography was of my subject of interest. Secondly, most questions in General Studies are based on Geography that helps to score more.

Cracking civil services examination was more important for me,” answered Pankaj Atulkar. Pankaj has an advice for the upcoming youngsters aspiring to crack civil services. “They should read the stories of people who succeeded in clearing this examination. They should read their blogs or whatever literature available about them and their study. I did the same,” Pankaj Atulkar made it clear. The civil services officers can influence the society, can help people at large, can change the lives of downtrodden so what Pankaj Atulkar feels.

“Exactly. When I started preparing for civil services two thoughts were in my mind--1. If I am selected for any of these services I can touch lives of millions of people and 2. I can make positive impact on their lives. It was happiest moment for me when I came to know that I got selected for IPS which I first shared it with my father,” said Pankaj Atulkar bubbling with enthusiasm. “I have a proud feeling for my children. With I remained outside most of the times their mother took all care of them and made them to study. Of course they were obedient and always behaved like good boys. It is because of that particular disposition of Pankaj that he could achieve this milestone,” commented proud father C B Atulkar
