The senior most bureaucrat Amitabh Jain has been appointed as the 12th Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh. Jain succeeded incumbent Chief Secretary Rajendra Prasad Mandal who retired on Monday. The 1989-batch IAS Jain has been serving as Additional Chief Secretary, Finance, Water Resources Department, before assuming the office of Chief Secretary on Tuesday. The General Administration Department of Chhattisgarh issued an order to this effect. Jain may be the longest serving Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh as he will retire in 2025. He is the only IAS of 1989-batch from Chhattisgarh. Jain has long experience of working in different departments in different capacities.
Jain has been handling finance for a long time. Besides, Jain has handled many portfolios like Commercial Tax, Home, Jail, Transport and Water Resources. Jain did his schooling from Dalli Rajhara and he has been a topper in the 11th board examination in undivided Madhya Pradesh. Jain completed his MTech in Mechanical Engineering from Raipur. During his deputation to the Central Government, he has also served for some time in London. Clam and quite by nature, Jain is considered among the trusted officers of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel and both hail from Durg district. Amitabh Jain also has his roots in Bhilai as his father had served the Bhilai Steel Plant in a senior position.
Jain has served as Minister (Economic) in the Indian High Commission in London during his deputation to the Center, where he worked to increase trade and investment between India and Britain. Jain’s first posting as IAS was as Assistant Collector in Jabalpur, undivided Madhya Pradesh. He then held various administrative posts at Neemuch, Surguja and Gwalior. Jain was then posted as the collector of Rajgarh, Chhatarpur and Hoshangabad districts. Jain was a two-time collector of Raipur district. After this, Jain served the Chhattisgarh Government as Secretary, Principal Secretary and Additional Chief Secretary with great skill.
