■ Only 17% engg colleges have NBA status; Passing percentage is above 80
THERE is a good news as far as students’ drop out rate in engineering colleges in Nagpur region is concerned. A data prepared by Dr Ram Nibude, Joint Director, Technical Education, Nagpur Region, says only 6.67% students dropped out in first year (2019- 20) of Engineering course. A good number of engineering colleges got themselves accreditated. Even the passing percentage of students in first and final year engineering is absolutely fantastic. But, the colleges in this region have shown poor performance in getting status of National Board of Accreditation (NBA) though it is quite good in acquiring status of National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC). Dr Ram Nibude did a complete study of all the 44 engineering colleges in region including their intake, their dropout rate, their result, their status of campus interviews, placements etc.
“It is the time now to think in a different way about admissions to technical courses. The issue of seat vacancy is still haunting the engineering colleges but we should encourage students and parents that why this particular branch is to be chosen,” pointed out Dr Ram Nibude while talking to ‘The Hitavada’. There are 44 engineering colleges, of which 33 alone are in Nagpur, 5 in Wardha, 4 in Chandrapur, 2 in Bhandara. Gadchiroli and Gondia don’t have engineering institution. The intake capacity of the region in engineering colleges is 17,136 of which institute level quota is 3,427, minority quota is 3,336.
The seats those come under Centralised Admission Process (CAP) are 10,373. In first year of 16,366 registered students, 9,286 got themselves admitted for academic year 2019-20 registering the vacancy of 56.74%. Of admitted 9,286 students, 8,668 students admitted in second year engineering leading to drop out per centage to 6.67. As per the details in data, the pass per centage of students in final year engineering is 83.01 while pass % of first year engineering stood at 78.41. The per centage of companies approached colleges in Nagpur region for pool campus is 32.92 while the placement reported is quite satisfactory-- 43.83%.
With Maharashtra Government is focussing on skill based technical education, we too started 158 skill-based training and continuing education programmes. Till now 12,247 students have benefitted. Of the total 44 engineering institutes, 23 have developed incubation centres and 416 are registered. Packages upto Rs 44 lakhs have been given to the students. There are a good number of technical institutions which have got accreditated themselves for NAAC. Of the total 44 institutes, 32 got accreditated. At the same time their NBA performance is very poor. Of 227 total programmes only 40 programmes have NBA status, a low per centage of 17.62. Getting NBA status in engineering courses is considered as an important criterion
