Thalassemia, sickle cell eradication should become nationwide drive, appeals Purohit

Appealing people to come forward and join hands of Dr Vinky Rughwani who is rendering selfless services to thalassemia and sickle cell patients, Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit said, “We earned our name by eradicating polio. In the same way we should launch drive for the eradication of thalessemia and sickle cell.” Purohit was speaking during the inauguration of free HLA matching camp, organised by Dr Vinky Rughwani Centre for Thalessemia and Sickle Cell at Jaripatka on Thursday.
Mayor Sandip Joshi, Chairman of Health Committee, Nagpur Municipal Corporation Virendra Kukreja, Educationist B R Bakhru, Vishwa Sindhi Sewa Sangam Maharashtra President Pratap Motwani, I P Keswani were seated on the dais. While admiring the efforts of Dr Rughwani, Purohit stated, “When everybody is running hither and tither and have no time to work for others, it gives pleasant feeling that somebody is working for the welfare of these children in such situation.
Dr Rughwani is not only working for the welfare of these patients in Nagpur but in whole Maharashtra. He has been trying to wipe the tears of the small children and their parents.” Purohit called the work of Dr Rughwani as selfless one and remarked it is not for the publicity or showing off. Purohit also lauded the initiative of ex-Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis who had announced Rs 3 lakh for each child for getting performed Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT).
This initiative benefited 100 children. “We did lot of work in the section of polio and achieved a huge success. In the same way we should do it in case of thalassemia and sickle cell. Everybody should do the matching of HLA to prevent the birth of thalassemic children,” suggested Purohit. Mayor Sandip Joshi assured Dr Rughwani that Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) would support in this endeavour to him. He promised, “We will do it with full force so that people would become aware of the minute details about sickle cell, thalessemia and no child will born with this dreaded disease.” Earlier, Banwarilal Purohit along with Sandip Joshi took a round of the camp which was in progress wherein Dr Rughwani explained them about the camp. He also made official inauguration of the camp.
Governor of Tamil Nadu Banwarilal Purohit will inaugurate Free HLA Matching Camp at Dr Vinky Rughwani’s Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Centre, Jaripatka on Thursday at 6.30 pm. The Director of Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Centre Dr Vinky Rughwani said Bone Marrow Transplantation is a permanent cure for Thalassemia and Sickle Cell disease. HLA Matching of the patients with their siblings and parents is must before undergoing Bone Marrow Transplantation. Normally this facility is not available in Central India. Also it is a costly procedure which costs around Rs 20,000 to each family.”
In the same programme Vishwa Sindhi Sewa Sangam Maharashtra President Pratap Motwani had organised a grand felicitation of Banwarilal Purohit. The activity touched Purohit and he called the girl Tejaswini Umale, a thalassemic patient who recited poem and felicitated her. Adv Vaishali Bagade compered the programme while Diganto Das, another thalessemic child proposed a vote of thanks. Chhaya Wankhede presented songs that regaled the audience. Prominent among those present were Arjundas Ahuja, Vijay Kewalramani, Dr Vandana Khushlani, Girish Sadhwani.
