Justice Bhushan Pradyumna Dharmadhikari, a Nagpurian, was sworn in as the Chief Justice of Bombay High Court on Friday. Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Governor of Maharashtra, administered the oath of office to Justice Bhushan Dharmadhikari at a brief swearing-in ceremony held at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai. Uddhav Thackeray, Chief Minister of Maharashtra; Devendra Fadnavis, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Assembly; Nana Patole, Speaker of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly; Aaditya Thackeray, Minister of Tourism, Protocol and Environment; family members of Justice Dharmadhikari, judges of the Bombay High Court; Ashotosh Kumbhakoni, Advocate General; Subodh Jaiswal, Director General of Police; and Parambir Singh, Commissioner of Police (Mumbai), were prominent among those present on this occasion. Ajoy Mehta, Chief Secretary, read out the Notification of Appointment of the Chief Justice issued by the President of India. The ceremony began and concluded with the National Anthem played by the Police Band.
 
Born on April 28, 1958, Bhushan Dharmadhikari did his B.Sc. (Biology), Additional B.A. in English Literature, and LL.B in 1980 from Nagpur University. After obtaining his law degree, he enrolled as an Advocate on October 17, 1980. He joined the chambers of Adv Y S Dharmadhikari at Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh), for a brief period and then returned to Nagpur and worked under Adv H S Ghare till 1984. Later, he started his independent practice. He practiced in the Bombay High Court in Civil, Constitutional, Labour and Service matters. He specialised in Labour and Service matters.
 
He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on March 15, 2004 and as Permanent Judge on March 12, 2006. Justice Bhushan Pradyumna Dharmadhikari was appointed as Acting Chief Justice of Bombay High Court on February 23 after the retirement of Chief Justice Pradeep Nandrajog. In its meeting held on February 24, the Supreme Court Collegium had confirmed his appointment as the Chief Justice. On March 19, Union Ministry of Law and Justice notified his appointment as the new Chief Justice of Bombay Court. It is a moment of pride for Nagpur as for the first time in the legal history of Bombay High Court, the Chief Justice of India Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde and Chief Justice of Bombay High Court Bhushan Dharmadhikari both are from the city.
