CR’s Nagpur Division initiates a new move by taking India Post on board to synergise energy of two departments
Central Railway’s Nagpur Division was again first of the block in hauling a consignment booked through the Speed Post of India Post giving a new dimension to transportation of goods by synergising energies of two Government Departments. A first lot comprising 16 cartons weighing about one tonnes were transported from city to State capital Mumbai. The tie-up was post initiative taken by officials of Commercial Branch at Nagpur Division. The partnership has given birth to India Post Railway Parcel Service, it synergies energy of two Government department in current difficult times.
Given the problem faced by individual and commercial establishments and closure of courier services during the lockdown, railway officials prodded officials of India Post to fill in the gap. The idea of railway officials was to make optimum use of COVID-19 Parcel Specials that are in operation during lockdown. With India Post ensuring picking and door step deliveries, one can be sure of hassle free service. Krishnath Patil, Sr. Divisional Commercial Manager, Nagpur Division, held talks with senior officials of India Post and convinced them to make most of the opportunity.
The matter was subsequently discussed at higher levels at Mumbai and a pact was inked between the two organisations. The services however is now available within Maharashtra State w.e.f. May 15 between Mumbai, Pune and Nagpur stations to be extended to other stations later. The only problem with Post is they are insisting on bulk bookings. Also the rates charged by Post are quite high compared to Indian Railways who are getting a fraction from the entire transaction. India Post shall pick up the consignments from the premises of the customers and deliver to the consignee at destination through special parcel trains being operated by the Central Railway and Postal Mail Motor Service. As a trial run the consignment picked up from Hingana in Nagpur on May 9 was transported through India Post Railway Parcel Service to Mumbai on May 10.
Thus, the first and last mile of the journey will be covered by India Post and transported between the origin and destination station through Railways. This service enables the customers to avail transportation of the consignments at economical rate and with door service facility. This marks further diversification of postal services into the logistics segment in a bigger way since this scheme is economical for larger consignments of two quintals or more. This also underscores the coming together of Indian Railways, started in 1853, and India Post, started in 1854, to offer convenience and value to customers.
