 The fire broke out at Mahalaxmi cotton ginning mill at Dhapewada on Saturday.

Fire at Mahalaxmi cotton ginning mill at Dhapewada in Kalmeshwar, which broke out in the afternoon, burnt down cotton bells worth nearly lakhs of rupees. According to police, the fire broke out at around 4.30 pm when a monkey jumped on the overhead electric wire near Distribution Point (DP) of MSEDCL. The cotton stock was kept in the shed of the mill which caught fire after sparking in the electric wires. The mill workers tried to douse the flames. Fire tenders from Nagpur, Khapa, Kalmeshwar and Saoner were pressed into service to douse the flames.
 
The area was engulfed in thick smoke in the evening. Staff of Saoner police station led by Police Inspector Ashok Koli also rushed to the spot. A police official said that the fire extinguishing was continued late in the night. A panchnama would be performed to ascertain exact cause of fire and volume of loss. Large number of villagers also gathered at the spot after news of fire spread in the area. The mill is owned by Indarchandra Daga and Nandlal Taori.
 
A total of 3,800 quintals of cotton was procured by Government from farmers at the mill. Vice-president of Zilla Parishad Manohar Kumbhare, Chairman of Sell and Purchase Committee Baba Kodhe, Chairman of Market Committee Baba Patil, Chairman of Panchayat Samiti Dada Bhingare, former MLA Dr Ashish Deshmukh, Sarpchand Suresh Dongre, Yuvak Congress’ Roshan Kodhe, Deorao Raut, Surendra Dhote, Dinkar Dhote, Sharad Thakre, Ghansham Raut and others visited the spot.
